More about Shanghai:

With over 23 million inhabitants, Shanghai is the economic, financial and industrial center of China. This Asian metropolis boasts an architecture filled with futuristic buildings, wide streets, neon colored lights, and of course many leisure and entertainment options. Bathed by the Pacific Ocean and cut by the Huangpu River, the city is divided into two major regions: the west side, called the Bund, represents old Shanghai, home to the historical sights, the best restaurants and the nightlife. Already in the east, sits Pudong, the new area and financial center of the city. It is well worth visiting Shanghai, one of the most sought-after cities in China and perhaps in Asia as a whole.

Where to stay in Shanghai:

The city of Shanghai has an excellent hotel offer compared to other Chinese cities, both in terms of variety and quality. When choosing your hotel in Shanghai it is important to take into consideration the location. One of the most popular areas to stay is the Bund, in this area of Shanghai there are several high quality hotels that offer good value for money. The Huangpu district is another interesting option. This is where the Shanghai Museum, People's Square and the famous Nanjing Road pedestrian street are located. The Historic Center is great if you want to stay in a more picturesque area. And if you prefer a more lively area, we suggest the French Concession district.

Getting around in Shanghai:

Shanghai has an extensive public transport network that works quite well and is based on subways, buses and taxis. The subway is the best way to get around Shanghai because it is a clean, cheap, effective, reliable and modern transportation option. The bus network is another good option, though, it is a bit tricky for foreigners. Our tip is to buy the prepaid Shanghai Public Transportation Card that can be used on any type of public transportation in Shanghai, including taxis.

Shanghai's subway network is constantly expanding due to the city's steady growth and with 588 kilometers it has the largest extension in the world. Subway is fast, safe, comfortable and convenient means of transportation to get around in Shanghai. Download an application called MetroMan that shows the map, the time that will take the trip and the value of it. And the best: the app works offline.

Tickets range from ¥3 to ¥15, depending on the distance. Our tip is to use a Shanghai Public Transportation Card, you can get it at any of the service booths that appear in every metro station or at a number of banks and convenience stores displaying the SPTC logo. You can even get money refund at subway machines and participating convenience stores before you leave the country.

The Huangpu River that runs through Shanghai, divides the city into two parts - Pudong New District (east of the river) and Puxi Area (west of the river). As a result, ferries play a very important role in the city's transportation. At present, there are in total 19 ferry lines serving nearly 40 ferry stations along both sides of the Huangpu River, providing links between Pudong and Puxi. Ferries run every 10 to 20 minutes from 7 am to 10 pm.

Tickets are sold at the kiosks located at the piers. Shanghai Public Transportation Card can also be used on Huangpu River Ferryboats.
Shanghai taxis are cheap and fast and are therefore a good option to travel around the city, especially outside peak times when there are no traffic jams. Always take your destination address written down in Mandarin because taxi drivers do not usually speak English and it is difficult to communicate with them.

Price: CNY 14.00   Convert to   = 0.00
Flag fall is ¥14 for the first 3km, and ¥2.5 per km thereafter. All taxis operate with a meter and there is no need to tip. You can also pay with the SPTC card.

There are bicycle lanes on almost every street in Shanghai and almost all wide enough to make safe overtaking. A great way to rent a bike in Shanghai is to download the MOBIKE app. After you link your credit card and make a deposit of ¥ 300 (this amount is returned when you cancel the contract with the company), simply scan the code of the bike and it unlocks automatically. The biggest advantage is that you can rent the bike and park anywhere, very handy!

On average, the amount charged is ¥ 1 for about 30 minutes.
