More about Saint Petersburg:

Saint-Petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities in Russia and in Eastern Europe. Created by Peter the Great, in 1703, to be his "Window onto Europe", St. Petersburg combines its fascinating Russian heritage with a modern European outlook. The former capital of Russia, St. Petersburg is a city of palaces and museums, broad avenues and winding canals. Alongside world-famous attractions such as the Hermitage, St. Isaac's Cathedral, and the Mariinsky Theatre, the city also has less known, but equally fascinating sights that reveal both the pomp and extravagance of St. Petersburg's Imperial past. Still considered as Russia's cultural capital, St. Petersburg reflects the country's extraordinary fate like no other city, and its uniquely rich atmosphere impresses even the most experienced traveler. Few cities can offer so many stunning attractions and intriguing places as St. Petersburg - City of the Tsars. From the vibrant colors of spring through the sunny...

Getting around in Saint Petersburg:

St. Petersburg's public transport network is extensive and efficient with one being able to get to a destination without a problem. The metro, which is the deepest in the world, is undoubtedly the best bet for visitors, and covers nearly all of the city, with new stations opening almost every year. Overground transport is bewilderingly varied with a system of buses, trolleybuses, trams, taxis, and marshrutkas (small shuttles). Fares for all kinds of public transport are comparatively low (it costs around $1 or less for any single journey), but if you are staying in the city for longer than a week, it is probably worth investing in a travel card.

St. Petersburg's metro is perhaps not quite as majestic as Moscow's, but architecturally it's still a cut above nearly any other public transport system in the world and it is also remarkably efficient. It is also the world's deepest subway, as its lanes go below the rivers and canals of St. Petersburg, so be prepared for vertiginous views from the top of the escalator. The first metro line was opened on November 15, 1955. Since then the metro network has grown to five lines with an average of 1.9 km (1.19 miles) between its 62 stations.

St. Petersburg's metro still uses a system of tokens ("zheton") in the size of larger coins. These can be bought from the cashier windows operating in every station vestibule or from the vending machines in nearly all stations.
There is also an option to buy a smart card with limited number of rides (for example, a smart card for 10 rides, valid for 7, days costs 295 RUB; a smart card for 20 rides, valid for 15 days, costs 560 RUB).
If you plan to use various means of transport, you can buy a "unified" ticket for metro, bus, trolleybus and tram valid for 1 month with a maximum of 70 rides, for 2380 RUB.

Train is also a popular way of transport in Saint Petersburg – from Moscow there are pleasantly slow overnight sleeper trains as well as fast 4-hour daytime Sapsan trains (the length of an ordinary trip on an ordinary train will usually take 8 hours). See www.rzd.ru for details.
From Helsinki, there are four daily Allegro express trains that take you from the Finnish capital to St. Petersburg in an impressive 3½ hours. See www.vr.fi for prices as they vary from timetable.

On the Sapsan and Allegro trains, tickets can be purchased through the websites www.rzd.ru and www.vr.fi, at ticket offices, on the phone service sales, in many travel agencies and in self-service terminals.

Buses, trolleybuses and trams are a very handy way to get around the city and they tend to cover routes that the metro doesn’t, making them essential for certain parts of town. Bus stops are marked by signs with the letter "A", which stands for "avtobus" and trolleybus and tram stops are marked with signs with a blue letter "T". On all of these transport types, you get on and then pay a conductor who will come around the vehicle and sell you tickets, he can usually be recognised by the special uniform.

It is very useful to buy the combined termless ticket, which can be used on bus, trolleybus, and tram, for 10 rides per 270 RUB.

The best way to get a taxi is to order one through a company as prices will be a lot lower than those charged if you flag a driver down on the street. Most companies will be able to get a car to you anywhere in the center of Saint Petersburg in 15-20 minutes. You will need to give the operator a phone number that you can be contacted on. Operators will usually not speak English, so unless you speak Russian you might want your hotel reception to order a taxi for you.

Price: RUB 400.00   Convert to   = 0.00
There is usually a minimum fare of around 200 RUB, which covers the first 5km (3,10 miles) of your journey. After that, you pay per kilometer, and the price will be calculated when you book it. It is better to check in advance if the taxi accepts payment via credit card or cash only (Rubles).

Marshrutkas (small shuttle or fixed-route minibus) are fast and you can get on and off anywhere along their routes. They are often the best means of getting to St. Petersburg's suburban attractions, and are the cheapest way to get to/from the city's airport. Route numbers, usually prefixed with the letter 'K', are prominently displayed on the front and side of the minibus (sometimes in English for popular tourist areas).

Price: RUB 36.00   Convert to   = 0.00
Try to pay as soon as you have boarded a marshrutka, passing your money (preferrably cash with no change) to the driver through the passengers in front of you.
