Where to stay in Punta del Este:

Before deciding on which hotel to stay you need to decide what area best fits your needs. There are two main places where most tourists stay: the Peninsula and La Barra. The peninsula is the most popular place for hosting because besides having great tourist infrastructure you can go to many places on foot. La Barra is known for its hip atmosphere, where young people like to enjoy the beaches during the day, and bars at night. This is a place with saltwater beaches and strong waves, full of art studios, and it is where the nightlife is a plus point and the raw infrastructure completes the relaxed atmosphere. Its streets are not always paved and the hustle focuses on Route 10, the main "street" of the resort.

Getting around in Punta del Este:

To get around the resort you need to analyze what is the best option for you, as public buses have uncommon runs, and taxis are very expensive, as they usually operate with luxury cars (such as limousine). The best option is to rent a bike or a car at the airport, especially for those arriving with their family.

Punta del Este has an excellent network of taxis and shuttle Remisses (vans or cars) to downtown or to the most remote areas. There are several taxis stands in the city, all with radio taxi service that allows you to request a car by phone. One should keep in mind that rates are high compared to the rest of the country.

Taxi payment system in Punta del Este is very similar to the one in Montevideo. The driver shall inform you the fare and rate according to the time and the number of "fixas" of your ride. The number of "fixas" equates a price in pesos displayed on a table shown to the passenger. The only difference between Punta del Este and Montevideo taxi service is the value of "fixas" which is much more expensive in this city.

Buses are a cheap means of transport and an alternative for those who want to save money. However, the not so frequent bus schedules make their use not viable as well as the lack of comfort of vehicles.

Ticket prices vary according to the route travelled: some buses leave from the bus station; others leave from bus stops at the waterfront. It is necessary to look for information on the best place to take the bus according to your final stop.
