Porto is not so big but has an amazing offer of hotels and hostels at great prices. The main recommendation is to stay in the city center, but there are also several good options close to subways or other sights. If you stay in the central region, you will be able to explore a lot of things by foot and will be in the heart of the city. Choose a hotel or hostel near the Avenida dos Aliados or Batalha, to ensure a prime location. The area of Ribeira which is near the River Douro is very pleasant to walk around and a good option to stay too. Another option is to stay in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river. From there, you will have a beautiful view of the city and will still be near the cellars that produce the famous Port wine.

Getting around in Porto:


There are several options for getting around the city, either the public transportation which is easy and economical, or even walking, especially if the weather is cooperating. In Porto attractions are situated very close to each other, which allows explore the city streets by foot, and this will give you a unique experience, rich in details. However, you can choose between subway, bus, electric tram or even taxi to get around the city.

 

The metro network in Porto is quite modern and consists of six underground lines connecting not only the main points of Porto but also Gaia, the town across the Douro River. Using subway in Porto is a great option to move between any point in the city.

There is no time of year considered bad for visiting the city that lies on the banks of the Douro River. However, the best time to go to Porto is between May and June and in September, with ideal mild temperatures for outdoor excursions. July and August are considered the hottest months with less rain. The more quiet time, when it comes to tourist movement, is from March to May or from September to the end of October. But remember that there is more rainfall from September.
