Where to stay in Moscow:

Moscow is a very hospitable city with various accommodation options enabling each visitor to choose the most appropriate type. In Moscow you may choose from luxury hotels, reasonably priced hotels, family-friendly hotels, hostels and even apartments for rent. As of the best accommodation area, it's better to stay anywhere within walking distance to the Red Square and the Kremlin (for example, near Pushkinskaya/Tverskaya/Chekhovskaya metro stations), as these are tourist friendly areas and have lots of restaurants, some with English menus. Any area inside the Garden Ring (Sadovoye Koltso) is a good place to stay as well, because it has easy access to public transport, which is the best way to get around and to visit more remote sights conveniently.

Moscow is one of the biggest cities in Europe and it is a massive transport hub, with three international airports and nine railway stations. The Moscow metro runs for more than 300 kilometers and it has 196 stops; it is the easiest, fastest and cheapest way to get around town. Taxis, buses, trolleybuses and trams might also be useful for reaching some sights far away from the city center.

One of the most popular choices of getting to and from the airports of Moscow is the service of non-stop airport trains called AeroExpress, which will take you to the city’s center within 30-50 minutes, avoiding traffic jams.

The Moscow metro is by far the easiest, fastest and cheapest way of getting around the city. It was ranked the 2nd best public transportation system around the world in a top 10 list by Ask Men's website. The first metro line in Moscow was put into operation in 1935. Nowadays, Moscow metro system has 196 stations and it runs daily from 6am to 1am. Up to 1955, metro stations were built from individual projects, each different from the other, but they all looked like palaces with their reflective marble walls, high ceilings and grandiose chandeliers. Later, between 1955 and 1970 mostly functional aspects prevailed.

We recommend buying a multiride ticket - the ticket for 20 rides costs 580 RUB and it is valid during 90 days - which can also be used to travel by bus, trolleybus and tram. There is also the option of buying a smart card with an unlimited number of rides - 1-day smart card, valid for 24 hours after the first ride, costs 210 RUB.

Buses, trolleybuses and trams might be necessary if you're traveling to some sights far away from the city center. Tickets are usually sold on the vehicle by a conductor or by the driver.

The safest and most reliable way to get a taxi is to request an official taxi by phone or book it online. After booking it, the dispatcher usually rings you back within a few minutes to provide a description of the car and its licence number. Taxi cabs are relatively affordable, but unfortunately most taxi drivers and dispatchers do not speak English.

Fares to and from airports have fixed prices. It is better to check in advance if the taxi accepts payment via credit card or cash only (Rubles).
