Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay and it is also its biggest city. Located in the south of the country, on the banks of the River Plate, this is the city of Latin American with the best quality of life and it is among the 30 safest ones in the world. The city has several sights: theaters, many shops, shopping center, and historical buildings such as the Head Office of Congress (Legislative Palace), the Cathedral (Mother Church) and the Municipal Theatre (Solís Theatre). The sunset is enjoyed on top of Cerro, where there is an old Spanish fort. Its gambling houses and beaches draw half a million tourists a year. Where to stay in Montevideo:
The waterfront of the capital of Uruguay is charming and it is also the most suggested lodging area. So, the neighborhoods of Pocitos and Punta Carretas, which are immediately behind it, should be taken into account. The taxi fare is affordable, taxis are everywhere and they are usually well-maintained cars. Another option is to use public transportation: buses do not fall short, but of course, this mean of transportation is more tiring, less comfortable and more time consuming. It is also an economic and reliable way of getting around Montevideo, as there is a law governing the service. Taxis are white, with a yellow ceiling and a yellow stripe on its side. To catch one, you may be in line at one of the taxi stands around the city, or you may just wave at an available one on the street.

About two years ago the government created the Metropolitan Transit System (STM, in portuguese) that merged all different buses systems into one. To get around town, just get a STM card at authorized stations and load it with the desired amount of money.
