More about Montevideo:

Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay and it is also its biggest city. Located in the south of the country, on the banks of the River Plate, this is the city of Latin American with the best quality of life and it is among the 30 safest ones in the world. The city has several sights: theaters, many shops, shopping center, and historical buildings such as the Head Office of Congress (Legislative Palace), the Cathedral (Mother Church) and the Municipal Theatre (Solís Theatre). The sunset is enjoyed on top of Cerro, where there is an old Spanish fort. Its gambling houses and beaches draw half a million tourists a year. Montevideo also has lots of museums, many of them located in buildings of great historical and architectural value. A very significant detail to take into account is that almost all of them have free admission, unlike most museums in the world.

Where to stay in Montevideo:

The waterfront of the capital of Uruguay is charming and it is also the most suggested lodging area. So, the neighborhoods of Pocitos and Punta Carretas, which are immediately behind it, should be taken into account. Usually tourists tend to want to stay downtown, and in this case it is important to point out that while the downtown area is more affordable, trade is fully closed during the evening and the streets are empty. Walk among the various bars, restaurants and shops in Pocitos and Punta Carretas is much more appealing. In addition to that, the Rambla (the Uruguayan boardwalk in front of River Plate) is close to this area and a walk around it is always a great option.

Getting around in Montevideo:

Upon arriving in Montevideo it is possible to get around by several means of transport, but the favorite one of most tourists is taxi. The taxi fare is affordable, taxis are everywhere and they are usually well-maintained cars. Another option is to use public transportation: buses do not fall short, but of course, this mean of transportation is more tiring, less comfortable and more time consuming. If you feel like it, walking through the city is also a great option and it can offer you incredible sunsets on the banks of River Plate.

Taxi is one of the favorite means of transport for travelers arriving in the country because of its speed and comfort. It is also an economic and reliable way of getting around Montevideo, as there is a law governing the service. Taxis are white, with a yellow ceiling and a yellow stripe on its side. To catch one, you may be in line at one of the taxi stands around the city, or you may just wave at an available one on the street.

Price: UYU 25.00   Convert to   = 0.00
Payment is made according to the meter. A little different from the usual, it will show you the number of "fixas" for your drive, which matches a price in pesos at a chart exposed to the passenger. In the evenings, Sundays and holidays, the fare is 20% more expensive. The "fixas" are usually 25.00 Uruguayan pesos each km driven.

Another great way of getting around Montevideo is by bus because its fare is affordable, it is clean and frequent. In front of each one, a colorful sign indicates its final stop. About two years ago the government created the Metropolitan Transit System (STM, in portuguese) that merged all different buses systems into one. To get around town, just get a STM card at authorized stations and load it with the desired amount of money.

Price: UYU 20.00   Convert to   = 0.00
The STM card is accepted in all vehicles. With just a single rate you can use as many buses as you want within an hour or two hours, you just have to tell the collector your kind of trip and the amount for it will be charged to your STM card. A 1 hour ride costs around 20.00 Uruguayan pesos. However, you can also pay your trip in cash (Uruguayan pesos).
