More about Johannesburg:

Johannesburg is the official name of the largest South African city, with about 4.5 million inhabitants. Jo'burg, as the locals call it, emerged during the gold rush of the 1880s, and continues to thrive with life and cosmopolitanism.
Dynamic, busy, modern and intense - the metropolis stands out for the rapid growth and the sympathy of its people. The city and its surroundings offer many interesting sights and beautiful landscapes for visitors - from neighborhoods filled with sophisticated malls to the savannas where you can see so-called big five, the five largest mammals that are most difficult to be hunted.

Where to stay in Johannesburg:

Johannesburg is a sprawling city with great distances between the neighborhoods. There are several lodging options for a good value for money. It is important to remember that, for safety reasons, you can hardly walk here during the night, especially in the center, except in closed and safe hotel complexes. The best neighborhoods to stay in Johannesburg are Sandton, Melrose, Melville and Rosebank. These neighborhoods are filled with shops, restaurants, entertainment and the vast majority of hotels and inns. For those who enjoy the nightlife, staying at Rosebank is the best option. If you choose the Sandton, we recommend staying in the surroundings of Sandton City and Mandela Square.

Getting around in Johannesburg:

The best way to get around Johannesburg is by car because the distances are very large and the local public transport leaves much to be desired. Walks are advised only during the day and in small, specific areas such as Melrose Arch and Sandton. Overall, the most viable options are to rent a car, use taxi/Uber or hire a tour company that offers tours to the main city's attractions and that way you also guaranty the service of a guide.

The Gautrain, modern train network, is the highlight of Jo'burg, it connects the International Airport, Sandton, Rosebank, Park Station (center of Jo'burg), Pretoria and Hatfield. Gautrain is an efficient, fast, clean and modern means of transportation to get to some parts of the city. Using Gautrain + Taxi is a good way to get around for those without a car.

Price: ZAR 151.00   Convert to   = 0.00
Please note that you have to purchase a Gautrain Gold Card (ZAR 15) first, and load credit for your journey. A one-way ticket between Tambo Airport and Sandton costs ZAR 151.

In Jo'burg there are private taxis, called "cabs", and the collective cars, simply called "taxis". Private taxi cabs do not use the meter - the vast majority work with tabulated fares, so when you get a cab/taxi, always negotiate the price before getting into the car. Another advisable option is to use Uber, which works very well in the city and you can use it safely and comfortably.

Price: ZAR 220.00   Convert to   = 0.00
Approx. ZAR 220 per 20 km ride.

Renting a car is a great option to have facility and comfort while touring the city and the attractions that are nearby. The value of renting a car is reasonable, the fuel too, and the ideal way would be to pick up the car and return it at the airport. There are several models, but we recommend mainly those with automatic gearbox, because they are easier to drive on the left-hand side of the road, which always requires double attention. The roads are very well signposted and with a GPS you will arrive easily anywhere.

Price: ZAR 750.00   Convert to   = 0.00
Credit cards are accepted. The price starts from ZAR 750 for rented car of economy class for 3 days.
For those who do not want to give up the comfort but can not rent a car, we advise to see the sights of the region through the tour companies. They offer private transportation to the main tourist attractions, the service of a guide and the airport / hotel / airport transfer. You can choose to take the tour individually or in a group.

Price: ZAR 2400.00   Convert to   = 0.00
Approx. ZAR 2400 for 3 day tours. The rates include all transportation and entrance fees to the attractions (meals are not included).
The interesting and economical option, without renting a car, is to use the hop-on / hop-off tourist bus to see the main points of interest. Purchasing the ticket (ZAR 170), you can cycle throughout the day, getting up and down on the stops of your preference. The tour starts in front of Park Station.

Price: ZAR 170.00   Convert to   = 0.00
A ticket valid for one day costs ZAR 170. There's a discount for online bookings.

Johannesburg has a subtropical climate throughout the year, with high summer temperatures and milder and more pleasant winters. The rains are unevenly distributed throughout the year, July is the month in which it rains less and January is the most rainy one. The temperature in Jo'burg can rise up to 30 °C in summer (in January and December). Even in June and July, the coldest months, it can rise above 17 °C, but on cold nights the temperature is below 10 °C - so we advise having a mixture of light and more warm clothes in your suitcase.
