More about Hong Kong:

Hong Kong, which is often called New York of the East, is one of the most lively cities in the world. This fascinating Asian metropolis surprises all who visit it with its European modernity (the place was colony of the British Empire for more than 150 years) and at the same time with the Chinese traditions that remain alive there. Admire the stunning neon-lit skyscrapers, shop at Kowloon's night markets and try its fabulous cuisine. If you like nature, it is a place full of options for trails, beaches and almost deserted islands. The city is the kind of place that appeals to everyone and you will always find something to do in Hong Kong.

Where to stay in Hong Kong:

Hong Kong has a wide range of hotels ranging from luxury hotels to family-run hostels. The city can be divided into three main parts: Hong Kong Island, where the main part of tourist attractions and the best restaurants are located; Kowloon, which is the mainland with a very good hotels and infrastructure, and the "New Territories", the most peripheral region that is close to the border with mainland China. Knowing that the New Territories is far away and that Hong Kong Island is very expensive, the best place to stay in Hong Kong is in Kownloon.

Getting around in Hong Kong:

The public transport system in Hong Kong is very efficient, which makes it possible to know the whole city using only public transport. The city has double-decker buses and a subway system of excellent quality, not to mention ferry services that make the crossing between the Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Our tip is to use the Octopus Card, as it is valid for all means of public transport. We also recommend having the UBER app that works well in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong subway is undoubtedly the fastest and most efficient way to get around. From the purchase of tickets, access to the stations, organization and cleaning, the Hong Kong subway is an exemplary thing. The subway is officially called the MTR - Mass Transit Railway, and has 12 lines with 155 stations connecting Hong Kong International Airport to Hong Kong Island and going beyond to Shenzhen in mainland China. The subway runs from 6am to 1am.

The value of the trip is charged according to the distance traveled (the minimum value is 4.5 HK$). You can buy the Single Ticket for 1 trip or the Octopus Card, which is a rechargeable card that can be purchased at the airport and at various points of sale and be recharged quite easily. The card costs HK$ 150 and HK$ 50 of that amount is used for travel credits and HK$ 100 is the cost of the card (when returning the card, this amount will be redeemed).

Buses are also a good option to travel in Hong Kong. They usually have two floors, are clean and have air conditioning. Buses cover all of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and New Territories with their final destinations displayed in both English and Chinese.

The value of the bus trip varies according to the distance, so before entering the transport, see the sign of the bus stop, which indicates the amount that should be paid. The ticket must be paid with the exact amount, as there is no collector and no change. Very practical is to use the Octopus Card.

By sea, the ferry fleets connect Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the Remote Islands. Using a ferry boat can sometimes be faster than using the buses and the MTR, not to mention the breathtaking views you'll have on the way.

The most practical way to pay for the ferry ticket is by using the Octopus Card.
There is an abundant supply of taxis in the city, color-coded according to their areas of operation. Contrary to the high cost of living in Hong Kong, taxis are not so expensive and, depending on the route you want to take, they are a good option. We recommend that you always have the name of your hotel or destination written in Chinese characters.

Price: HKD 22.00   Convert to   = 0.00
Taxis operate with a meter and the official taxi fares start at HK $22, which goes up as the vehicle moves.
